While the vineyards of Bordeaux are in the grip of deep crisis, the work of Château Le Geai is exemplary. When he took over his family's 18 hectares of vineyard in 2000 – situated in the Libourne wine region, north of Pomerol – and created Château Le Geai, Henri Duporge chose to adopt a viticulture and vinification methods which respect life (with biodynamic certification). A far cry from the processes of conventional winemaking, he seeks naturalness and authenticity, with an approach that reflects as much rigour as it does inventive freedom.
From a terroir typical of the Libournais region (sandy-clay soils, iron-rich subsoil), situated on the hillsides overhanging the river Isle, Le Grand G blends traditional Bordeaux grape varieties: Merlot, Carbernet Sauvignon, Malbec and Carmenère – a once-forgotten, rediscovered varietal. Gentle vinified and aged in amphora and barrels, this is an expressive, savoury red with a fresh and "earthy" texture and slight effervescence. And moderately priced, for a Bordeaux!
