Microbio wines - Ismael Gozalo
CASTILLA Y LÉON
Verdejo is a typically Spanish white grape variety, grown mostly in the Rueda area in the province of Segovia, Castile and León. A prominent personality of the young Spanish generation of natural winemakers, Ismael Gozalo is rightly considered "the magician of verdejo"! He farms vines located around Nieva in the south-east of this appellation, vines which have belonged to his family for several generations.
It was in 1998 that Ismael Gozalo, after various experiences, initiated his personal project, called Microbio wines, from family vineyards. Its approach is based on an high-altitude vineyard mainly composed of the local white grape variety, Verdejo, with old prephylloxera, ungrafted vines, as well as regional grape varieties, with vinifications and varied methods of élevage, notably in tinajas (terracotta amphorae) or in barrels. Viticulture is done strictly without inputs, and the vinifications are carried out in a completely natural way. Gonzalo's cuvées - under the name of Microbio wines or under his own name - bear witness to a great and very personal style: rich, generous wines with a strong mineral imprint.
